Law school is a retrieval problem disguised as a reading problem. You will read a thousand pages and be examined on whether you can spot which rule a fact pattern triggers, in forty minutes, without notes.
So every case gets a brief in IRAC form, and every brief links to the rule it states. Over a semester those links build the thing you actually need at exam time: a map from fact pattern to rule to authority.
Then 08-Cases/Case Index shows you every rule you have briefed, grouped by topic. That is your outline, and you did not write it — it wrote itself while you did the reading you had to do anyway.
The issue-spotting drill
Open book is not a safety net — it's a time trap. The marks are in spotting which issue a fact pattern raises, not in finding the rule.
